On-Screen Marking workflow: from physical answer sheet to results

A stage-by-stage OSM workflow: physical answer sheet, scanning, secure processing, examiner allocation, on-screen evaluation, optional AI suggestions, human review, moderation, revaluation and result integration.

The pipeline

This is a reference workflow for digital evaluation. Not every university, and not every Avid OSM deployment, uses every stage. AI-assisted suggestions are optional. Moderation and revaluation follow institutional rules. Result integration depends on which student-information or ERP system is in use.

  1. Physical answer sheet Handwritten (or similarly paper-based) script after the sitting. Custody and anonymity rules still apply in the physical world.
  2. Scanning / digitisation Overhead or high-speed capture. Books may be opened or restuck. Image quality is an evaluation requirement, not a cosmetic preference.
  3. Secure script processing Controlled storage; copy and page identification; quality flags; often a human QA pass before a copy is assignable.
  4. Examiner allocation Empanelled examiners receive packets of approved, typically anonymised copies. The exam cell sees progress.
  5. On-screen evaluation Examiner reads the script, enters question-wise or part-wise marks, annotates if required, and submits.
  6. AI-assisted suggestions where enabled Optional. Software may propose marks and reasons. This stage is skipped entirely in manual OSM.
  7. Human examiner review The examiner accepts, edits or ignores suggestions. Recorded marks are an examiner and institutional act — not an unsupervised model output.
  8. Moderation / review Where statutes require sampling, second marking or scaling. Configuration differs by university.
  9. Revaluation where applicable Often on the unmarked original if annotation layers are stored separately. Second revaluation only if the ordinance provides for it.
  10. Marks / result integration Export or integration into gazette / SIS / ERP workflows. Not automatically the same product as OSM.

How to use this diagram

Journalists and COEs can cite individual stations without implying that Avid (or any vendor) invented the category. For Avid-specific examiner and university-panel behaviour, use the product page. For AI governance, use the human-in-the-loop explainer.

Does every Avid OSM deployment include AI and revaluation?

No. AI-assisted suggestions, moderation models and revaluation paths depend on the institution’s process and contract. The workflow shows stations that may be present.
