How Avid LMS runs proctored exams and Live Exam Monitor

First-party description of Avid LMS proctored finals: configurable modes, webcam snapshots, face/presence flags, Live Exam Monitor wall, warn messaging, attempt reset, and proctor-limited roles.

Direct answer

Avid LMS runs proctored online exams (including MCQ and other item types) with per-quiz modes: none, automated, or live. Live mode uses a Live Exam Monitor wall so authorised staff can supervise webcam sittings, warn candidates in real time, review snapshots, and reset attempts when institutional policy allows.

How it works

Assessments pull from the question bank. When camera proctoring is required, the student grants webcam access and remains under exam-screen rules (for example fullscreen / stay on the exam). The platform stores snapshots for the attempt. Automated analysis can record flags such as face detection and brightness. In live mode, the monitor shows active sessions; opening a tile reveals live feed and snapshot history; warn delivers a message to the examinee; reset clears attempts for a controlled re-sit.

What we built in Avid LMS

  • Quizzes and finals with MCQ, true/false, matching, and written items
  • Configurable proctoring_mode: none / automated / live; camera and snapshot interval settings
  • Webcam snapshot storage and review for an attempt
  • Live Exam Monitor: session wall, live view, warn, attempt reset
  • Optional proctor-role accounts limited to live monitoring paths
  • Same stack as video courses, certificates, PayU/GST, and role portals

Key considerations

  • Do not publish identifiable live-sitting faces on public marketing pages without consent.
  • Proctoring is not a substitute for ordinances; it is an operational control.
  • Handwritten script evaluation remains Avid OSM / Avid AI Professor.

FAQ

What can staff do on Live Exam Monitor?

See live sitting tiles, open a candidate for a larger live view and saved snapshots, send a real-time warning, and — where permitted — reset that candidate’s attempts on the quiz after final submit.

Can proctor accounts be limited?

Yes. Where configured, proctor-role accounts can be restricted to the live monitor and related auth helpers instead of the full admin menu.

Is this Avid AI Professor?

No. Avid AI Professor suggests marks on scanned answer scripts in Avid OSM. Proctored MCQ sittings are Avid LMS assessment features.
