What an OSM evaluation screen must do (Avid OSM)

Production OSM is a script viewer plus a marks panel: page navigation, pen annotations, part-wise marks, compulsory and best-of schemes. How Avid OSM 3.0 implements that for examiners.

Direct answer

An on-screen marking evaluation screen has to hold the scanned answer book and the question-paper scheme in one session. The examiner must move page by page, optionally annotate, enter marks the way the paper is structured (including parts and “attempt any n”), and submit. A gallery of images without a scheme is not evaluation software.

How it works

Handwritten university papers are rarely “one score”. Law, arts and professional papers often split Part A / Part B, mix compulsory items with optional sets, and require sub-part marks that sum under a ceiling. The software has to enforce or at least display that arithmetic so the examiner is not doing it on a calculator beside a blurry scan.

Pen or tick marks on the image are not decoration: they are how an examiner (and a later moderator) sees what was credited on the page, not only a number in a grid.

What we built in Avid OSM

In Avid OSM the live evaluation view includes:

  • High-resolution handwritten script viewer with page navigation
  • Digital pen / tick annotations on the answer script
  • Part-wise marks (including Part 1 and Part 2 layouts used in many Indian university papers)
  • Compulsory and best-of schemes in the marks panel
  • Optional one-click Avid AI Professor suggestions across questions, which the examiner can edit before submit

This screen is the same lineage as the 2020 production system at Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar Law University, Jaipur — four years in production, more than 3,00,000 answer sheets evaluated in each of those years — now as OSM 3.0 with optional AI assistance.

Key considerations

  • If the scan order is wrong, the best UI still marks the wrong page.
  • Scheme configuration belongs to the exam cell, not to each examiner inventing columns.
  • AI suggestions must fill the same scheme fields, not a parallel “AI total” that ignores parts.

FAQ

Does Avid OSM only store a PDF of the answer book?

No. The examiner works on high-resolution pages with navigation, optional pen ticks on the script, and a structured marks panel tied to the paper scheme.

Can part-wise marks follow compulsory and best-of rules?

Yes. Avid OSM is designed so Part 1 / Part 2 style papers can use compulsory questions and best-of schemes, not only a single total field.
